SGS INNOVATION- Making the Impossible- POSSIBLE!

Subsea Global Solutions was the resource hired to develop an innovative solution for the extraction of retractable azimuthing thrusters in a VERY shall environment.  This project required several phases using a purpose designed and built hydraulic jacking system to demount and exchange these thrusters.  The Azimuthing thrusters were the propulsion system on a specialty vessel which were not originally designed for underwater demounting.  Due to the strategic nature of this vessel and its home port location a unique solution was required.

Teams from our SGS East and West Coast offices participated in this ground breaking azimuthing thruster exchange with the Original Equipment Manufacturer.  Since this thruster was not designed for underwater demounting and the location was sensitive and shallow, the innovative tension leg track system was employed in this case to demount the lower gear boxes for overhaul and repair.

Subsea Global Solutions is your resource for unrivaled service.  Driven by our core values, we make the impossible POSSIBLE each and every day.

Emergency Repairs- Propeller Removal with Vessel in Service

Picking Blade 8
Emergencies happen on vessels each and every day.  Cruise ship operators rely on the capabilities of Subsea Global Solutions to deliver unrivaled service.  While operating in the Caribbean, a cruise vessel detected deterioration of a critical bearing in one of it’s propulsion azimuthing thrusters.  Even with the thruster taken out of service, the windmilling of the propeller continued to deteriorate the bearing increasing it’s risk of complete failure.  To avoid a complete failure and to ensure the vessel remained in service, Subsea Global Solutions was called into to remove the built up propeller.

Working with the cruise ship operations staff, Subsea Global Solutions project management and operations staff evaluated the itinerary of the vessel and developed a port by port time line. Once approved, critical equipment was strategically placed in the necessary ports of call and work begun.

Subsea Global Solutions prepared the propeller for extraction.  This required that the epoxy fairing the propeller blade hold down bolts into the propeller to be completely extracted from the blade bolt holes.  This process required the epoxy to be hydro-blasted away completely using a specialized hydro-blaster specifically configured for this application.

4 Blades On Flat Bed-14In the next port of call blade extraction was performed.  Subsea Global Solutions placed all rigging into place so that blades could be efficiently extracted from the propeller and rigged on-shore.  Using a hydraulically configured ratcheting wrench configured for underwater applications, Subsea Global Solutions efficiently extracted all the blade bolts on each blade.  Blades were removed one-by-one to the surface and the azimuthing thruster was now free of any risk of continued bearing deterioration..

Throughout the entire process Subsea Global Solutions’ project management staff maintained time line communications with ship and operational management staff.  This ensured that the vessel could leave on time without impact or delay.

Subsea Global Solutions yet again demonstrates what unrivaled service is all about.  We do what you say when we say we’re going to do it!  We do it safely, efficiently and on-time.  This is what Subsea Global Solutions is all about and we look forward to working with you.

Propeller Efficiency Improvements- While in Service!

Personnel Shell Lock door- Cruise1Everyone is looking for ways to improve fuel oil consumption rates.  It helps us improve our environment impact footprint and most importantly it improves a vessel’s bottom line.  Subsea Global Solutions has been working with several propeller manufacturers to develop innovative procedures to exchange propeller boss caps while vessels are afloat and remaining in service.  Recently, this approach was proven with great success on a cruise vessel in operation during a cruise through the Caribbean.

Subsea Global Solutions is the leader in underwater services for the cruise industry globally.  The key to our success is proper planning and communication with all stakeholders involved with the project.  Prior to the delivery of the performance enhancing propeller boss cap fins, Subsea Global Solutions worked together with the equipment manufacturer to develop an OEM approved underwater installation procedure.  This required design enhancements to be incorporated into the new propeller boss cap, required specialized tooling to be developed by Subsea Global Solutions and an innovative procedure to be developed so that the OEM requirements were incorporated and the client’s operational requirements were incorporated.  Once the procedure was approved by all the stakeholders, Subsea Global Solutions worked toOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAgether with the client to incorporate the required work scope into the itinerary of the vessel.  This meant that during port stays specific portions of the work scope would be completed at strategic times during the voyage.  This allowed the vessel to remain in service, and to continue in operation safely and efficiently.  The cruise passengers continued their vacation experience without any impacts.

Once the manufacturer delivered the equipment to the vessel and Subsea Global Solutions’ equipment was staged onboard, the execution of the work begun.  Port by port time lines were reviewed with onboard personnel and Subsea Global Solutions’ Project Management staff onboard maintained continual communication with shipboard and operations management staff during the execution of the work.  This allowed the shipboard staff and vessel management staff to be prepared for departure on time and schedule.

Personnel Shell Lock door- Cruise2Subsea Global Solutions successfully completed the exchange of the two (2) enhanced propeller boss caps in parallel without taking the vessel out of service.  Work was completed over two consecutive ports of call with the client seeing immediate improvement in the propeller efficiency.  Innovation is the cornerstone of our success and we were pleased to have the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities with this client.  Let us know how we can apply this to your vessel’s needs.  We remain ready to go as your trusted resource to deliver unrivaled service!

Curacao- your next Oil and Gas Destination

Paragon DPDS12Lots of tourists flock to Curacao for it’s crystal clear water, excellent weather conditions and “Customer Focused” approach to service.  Curacao maintains one of the deepest sheltered anchorages in the world and is strategically located in the transit route between West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico, or Brazil to the Gulf of Mexico.   Curacao also boasts the leader in global underwater ship maintenance and repair Subsea Global Solutions.  Considering all of these factors Paragon Offshore took the opportunity to perform some critical service in Curacao while transiting into the Gulf of Mexico.

While on route to the Gulf of Mexico, Paragon’s dynamically positioned drillship DPDS1 stopped over in Curacao to demount two azimuthing thrusters before it came into the Gulf of Mexico.  Paragon’s choice of Curacao was simple due to the factors stated above and the previously great experience they had working  with Subsea Global Solutions in this location.  Paragon required Subsea Global Solutions to provide all of the resources outboard the vessel including all the necessary cranes, barges, boats, fendering systems and of course professional Diver / Technicians.  An innovative rigging system was designed and supplied by Subsea Global Solutions so that the thruster demounting process could be performed efficiently and safely.  Since Curacao is one of Subsea Global Solutions’ home ports, all the required resources were available for Paragon’s use.
Paragon DPDS1-21With all plans, procedures, risk assessments and engineering completed, Subsea Global Solutions proceeded to outfit the barges and vessels with the necessary equipment to support the thruster demounting process.  Upon the vessel’s arrival in Curacao, Subsea Global Solutions mobilized into the anchorage with its team.  With project coordination meetings completed and lock out / tag out completed with the ship’s crew and inboard thruster service team, Subsea Global Solutions began the process of preparing each thruster for underwater demounting.  Diver / Technicians dove directly underneath the drillship and opened access panels for thruster rigging.  Rigging was installed and thruster demounting was monitored continuously underwater by our diver / technicians.  Once each thruster was completely demounted each thruster was brought top side and loaded on the drillship’s deck for its continued transit into the Gulf of Mexico.  Cover plates were installed over the thruster openings in the ship’s hull and the hull was prepared for its transit to the Gulf of Mexico.  To assist with the fuel efficiency of the vessel while it completed it’s transit to the Gulf of Mexico a complete Hull Cleaning was performed and the Propellers of the retractable azimuthing thrusters were polished.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe DPDS1 left on schedule its fixed mounted azimuthing thrusters demounted and were on deck for the remainder of the voyage.  Paragon Offshore was very satisfied with the services provided and looks forward to “vacation again” with its offshore assets in Curacao.  Subsea Global Solutions is your global resource for unrivaled service.  Take a vacation and leave your underwater rig repair or service to us!  Curacao is your fully inclusive service location with Subsea Global Solutions leading the way!

Underwater Shaft Seal replacement- 3 seals in a week….

DSC02693No one likes a leaking shaft seal.  Neither the ship, the environment or the office is happy when this occurs!  Subsea Global Solutions has pioneered the methodology to performing a permanent replacement of shaft seals underwater in either a wet or dry environment.  By working closely with our OEM partners, Subsea Global Solutions sets the standard for shaft seal renewal while a vessel remains afloat and in service.  As seals design changes occur and OEM’s find more robust materials for the industry Subsea Global Solutions stays ahead of the competition by improving our process and procedures.

Last month, Subsea Global Solutions was busy executing three (3) shaft seal replacements in one week.  This involved three crews of professional diver / technicians mobilized to three locations on two continents on either side of the world.  By maintaining a full compliment of fully employed and factory certified diver / seal technicians on staff together with equipment strategically located around the world,  Subsea Global Solutions was able to mobilize quickly and deliver a factory warranted and class approved seal renewal in all of the cases.

Each case required careful planning and timely execution since all vessels remained in service and on very tight itineraries.  In all cases Subsea Global Solutions removed the rope guards using their carbon arc hydro-gouging system.  By surgically removing the welds attaching the rope guard to the stern tube, the rope guard can be easily reinstalled once the shaft seal exchange is completed.  With full access to the seal, the Diver / Technicians could assess the damage.

09 oil passage hole blocked - air testIn one seal exchange the flexible Hyperbaric cofferdam, Transhab was installed securely into place.  With precision and care the damaged seal lip rings were removed and reinstalled using a factory approved bonding process and bonding agent.  Once completed the Diver / Technicians performed quality control measurements and pressure tests to ensure a proper seal fit.  Upon completion of the seal renewal, the rope guard was welded back to the stern tube by coded welder  / divers.  Subsea Global Solutions maintains class approved “A” class wet welding procedures.  All welder / divers are coded to this procedure which ensures a top quality and class approved weld is executed on the rope guard.

New Picture (6)In another case, once the rope guard was removed giving full access to the face and seat on a specialized new generation face type seal.  Due to the critical nature of the face and seat materials, specialized training and certification was required from the seal manufacturer.  With Subsea Global Solutions maintaining certification with the OEM in this case, Diver / Technicians were able to perform the renewal completely wet utilizing an OEM and class approved procedure.  Without flooding the stern tube and controlling any oil release from the stern tube, the face and seat was renewed restoring the sealing capability of the shaft seal.  Upon completion of the seal renewal, the rope guard was welded back to the OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAstern tube by coded welder  / divers utilizing the class approved “A” class wet welding procedures.

From Australia to America and back  all in one week!  Subsea Global Solutions delivers unrivaled service day in and day out without fail!  We are here to serve you!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANo one ever plans to perform shaft seal repairs to their vessel.  These failures typically happen at the most inopportune time and in the most remote locations.  While a vessel was transiting in the South Pacific, issues with the shaft seal developed.  Subsea Global Solutions was immediately put on alert together with the seal manufacturer.  Under consultation from the seal manufacturer and considering the location of the vessel it was decided to perform an inboard temporary repair to allow the vessel to transit to a suitable location to perform a permanent shaft seal replacement.  With this temporary repair in place the vessel transited back to the North American West Coast where Subsea Global Solutions’ West Coast office attended the vessel while it performed cargo operations.  Subsea Global Solutions deployed one of its dozen Transhab flexible hyperbaric cofferdams specifically designed to create a dry hyperbaric environment around the shaft seal system.  Due to the unique design of this particular vessel’s stern tube, the engineering department at Subsea Global Solutions created a unique adapter flange to accommodate this Transhab fit up.  Since the Transhab system is completely independent of the sealing system it allows a complete shaft seal replacement, housing replacement, liner replacement and even a shim installation or removal; all done in a dry hyperbaric environment.

09 oil passage hole blocked - air testOnce the TransHab was installed the seal area was “de-watered” and a Original Equipment Manufacturer approved seal replacement was performed by certified and trained diver technicians.  Seal replacement included the replacement of all of the lip seal rings utilizing an approved dry hyperbaric bonding method.  Subsea Global Solutions is the only underwater service contractor that consistently trains annually with this seal manufacturer and maintains diver technicians certified to service and bond new shaft seals in a dry hyperbaric environment.  By maintaining diver technicians fully employed with this high level of training, Subsea Global Solutions together with the Original Equipment Manufacturer can provide a full factory warranty on this seal replacement.

Once the shaft seal was replaced the rope guard was welded back into place utilizing the “A” class wet welding procedures developed by Subsea Global Solutions and are class society approved.  By utilizing coded divers to this procedure, the welding performed was considered permanent according to class thus eliminating any notations on this repair performed.

The vessel sailed away with a completely renewed shaft seal system with a minimal impact to its schedule.  This critical repair allowed the vessel to remain in service even though it had years ahead of it to it’s next scheduled dry docking event.
